New Years Resolutions? Solutions?

Image from
fineartamerica.com

Okay...I'll be honest, I'm not one to usually make New Years resolutions but, I may have changed my own mind this time around. I wasn't planning on making resolutions this coming 2012 but then I thought to myself, wait a minute, this is the perfect opportunity for me to think only about "Me!" There isn't always room in the hustle and bustle of life to stop and think about yourself and the wants and desires you have for your life and future and the New Year gives us just that! Allow yourself to brainstorm solutions to problems or ideas and set out to resolve!
Resolutions can be big or small, easily tangible or hard to reach! It gives us something to look forward to and again, gain personal grown and achievement! Also, keep in mind it doesn't have to be something new! If you have had great success on your vegetarian diet through 2011 and want to continue, make that your resolution!

Note to self: if the goal isn't achieved, well...there's always next year right?!!

Here are a few of my 2012 New Year's Resolutions and Solutions!

1.) Drink LOTS more water.
2.) Re-evaluate finances. I'm going to be a first time momma in 2012 so, the bank account is going to be changing quite a bit for our new bundle of joy! :)
3.) Remind myself more often of all the wonderful joys I have in my life. Big or small. Its a good feeling and reminds me of how far I've come and the obstacles I've tackled like a linebacker! (examples, the yummiest chocolate chip cookie ever made by the world's best husband, and Women's rights! - Okay, I'm 26 but think about it...I'm grateful!!)
4.) Find a new charity/foundation to support and be apart of.
5.) Discover a new hobby I can do with my husband. <3
6.) Blog more!!

Let me in on your New Years Resolutions or why you don't make them! Remember, your opinion counts, its what makes you, YOU!

Happy 2012!!!!!!! <3 Amy

Holiday Oreos

In spirit of the Christmas Season, I wanted to make this simple sweet treat to bring to a holiday party. Who doesn't love Oreos? Bring them together with melted chocolate and wa-la, Chocolate Covered Oreos! These little treats will be sure to add a little jingle to any party or household!

What you Need:
1 Package of Double Stuffed Oreos (any flavor you like)
2 Packages of White Chocolate Chips
Holiday Sprinkles
Wax Paper

Begin by melting the white chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave in a large bowl until smooth and creamy!

Next drop an Oreo one by one into the bowl of chocolate and spoon the mixture over the entire Oreo until it is covered.

Place each chocolate covered Oreo on a sheet of wax paper spacing them far apart so they don't touch.

Lastly, quickly before the chocolate begins to set, sprinkle with your favorite holiday sprinkles!

Allow at least 30 minutes for the chocolate to harden and sprinkles to set before removing from wax paper. Can be stored in a airtight container.

Prime Time

It's been awhile since I have made a blog post but I have been working hard at making a list of ideas to share with you all!

Today I'm sharing with you tips and suggestions about Foundation Primers! What's a foundation primer you ask? Its a MUST in your makeup collection. A foundation primer is a light weight base applied usually after your moisturizer and before your foundation. A prime does what its name suggests, primes the face for your makeup. Similar to priming a wall before you paint it!

In the priming process there are several benefits:

1.) Its going to give you the best possible results from your foundation. It will set a clean canvas for your foundation or powder to work with and provide even coverage.
2.) Depending on the primer you choose, it can help with oil control, acne, moisturize, or help with anti-aging benefits.
3.) A little bit goes a long way!! Primers are a little on the pricey side so I usually buy very small bottles of primer. It would take me a long time to go through a full size bottle. So save a little on $, spread out your foundation and grab a small travel size!
4.) You benefit from a flawless coverage!

Here are my top 3 favorite Foundation Primers:

1.) Hourglass VEIL Mineral Primer. $52.00. Mini Size $17.00.
This primer has so many benefits. It is creamy and lightweight. It minimizes the appearance of large pores, is water resistant, helps with oil control, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, contains SPF 15, and is vegan - yeah! Again, buy the travel size at Sephora to help with cost on this little guy. :)

2.) Arbonne Virtual Illusion Makeup Primer. $40.00.
I recently tried this primer from my Arbonne Consultant and was very delighted with its results. Arbonne is know around the world for their botanically created masterpieces in the cosmetic, body, health, and wellness categories. This primer named in Total Beauty's Top Primers is the smoothest of them all. It glides on like butter but leaves your skin feeling like silk! It provides a matte finish while its botanical ingredients contain anti-aging,  toning, and vitamin benefits. I'm not sure if this comes in a travel size but you won't be disappointed in this one. I would recommend this primer for anyone who needs to maintain the moisture in their skin.
Contact Arbonne Specialist Jane Stickland (click her name) to discover Arbonne and try their wonderful makeup primer!

3.) Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer. $36.00. Mini Size $16.00.
This primer was also on the list of Top Primers by Total Beauty, is flawless and well balanced. I chose to get the Light version of this primer because it is oil-free. This primer is going to help with those who have oily, acne prone, or sensitive skin. It will give you visibly soft skin and can actually be used with or without makeup! I use this one if I'm only going to wear a powder and no liquid foundation. Minimizes imperfections on the face and provides vitamin C! Again, a little bit goes a long way. I use about the size of a pencil eraser if not less. It absorbs quickly so effortlessly drape this airy light formula all over your face, eyelids included! This primer can be found at Smashbox, Sephora, or Ulta.

If you have any questions or need more tips on priming, contact me by email or always comment on Facebook as well!! Enjoy your Prime Time! :)

The Art of the Choke

Lets talk about Artichokes shall we? What's to know?

This green and purple flowering plant head originated in what biologists suspect to be, North Africa, due to the seeds still found today in their wild state. The Artichoke quickly gained popularity and was spread throughout the world to places such as Rome, Egypt, Naples, and ultimately landing in the United States. The artichoke reached the US by the 19th Century. Today California provides 100% of the United States supply of Artichoke where an Artichoke Festival is held ever year.

The beauty of the Artichoke is not only recognized on the outside but its health benefits on the inside will surprise you and ignite inner beauty. Artichokes contain the highest account of antioxidants per capacity of any vegetable reported. It's health benefits enable better digestion, strengthen liver and gall bladder function, and reduces cholesterol levels. It can be eaten in many different ways such as in; soups, pizzas, salads, dips, dressings, or just as is! Below I'm sharing with you my favorite way to indulge in this powerful yet delicious vegetable.

Boiled Artichokes with Creamy Dip
This Recipe Makes 2 Artichokes

Chose as many artichokes as you have guests. I do 1 per person.
1 lemon per artichoke. 2 Artichokes = 2 Lemons.
4oz Cream Cheese
1/4 cup of Cheese (This can be any kind you like. Gorgonzola, Cheddar, Brie, Blue Cheese, Parmesan,  etc. Its easiest to use a softer cheese to melt well.)
2 tablespoons of heavy cream
1 Garlic Clove minced.
2 teaspoons of thyme
2 teaspoons of parsley
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

-Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat.
-Rinse the artichokes in cool water.

Start with the Artichokes by trimming:
-Cut the bottom stem off so the artichoke can sit upright.
-Trim the tops of all the leaves with sissors to remove the sharp points.
-Lastly, trim the point off the very top of the artichoke about an inch or so.

-Drop the Artichokes into boiling water.
-Halve the lemons and squeeze the juice into the boiling water, then toss in the lemons.
-Boil artichokes about 30 minutes, until tender. Check at 30 mins. to see if you can stick a knife through the bottom of the stem. If it goes through nicely, they are cooked.
-Place a strainer in the kitchen sink and carefully drop each artichoke in strainer upside down to allow all the axcess water to drain out.

-Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together; cream cheese, cheese of your choice, heavy cream, garlic, thyme, parsley, salt and pepper. Melt together on stove top or microwave until fully melted and creamy.

-Next carefully pick up each artichoke with thongs, **NOTE: THEY WILL BE HOT!!**, and place on serving dish.
-Take the top of the artichoke and start to open the top spreading the leaves out to the sides. Do this gently as the leaves will be soft and fall out easily.
-Once you can see the inside of the artichoke, take a spoon and insert it into the choke and begin to scrap out all the fine little hairs inside the artichoke. Keep cleaning out the inside until you don't see any more hairs.
-Once cleaned, fill each center of artichoke evenly with Creamy Cheese Dip. Slightly push the opening back together to keep warm and serve.

How to eat:
Start by pulling out each leave from the artichoke, holding the outer part in your fingers and dip into cheese dip. Place the bottom of the leave in your mouth and while holding the tough top part of the leave, pull the flesh of the artichoke leave off with your teeth. It should peel away freely. Discard the leaf. Continue indulging until no more leaves are left. Just above the base of the artichoke is the actual heart or the choke. That may also be eaten whole.

Although artichokes take some time to prepare, I assure you, it will be time well spent! They are great for a romantic dinner for two or a fun hands on side for a dinner party. I hope you enjoy exploring this vegetable and benefiting its wonders. Bon Appetit!

Flatten Out!

It's been awhile since I've done a post and boy have I been busy! My younger sister just got married and one of the items I gave her that were a saving grace were simple flats to wear at her reception. I had them at my wedding, got them for a friends wedding, and now for my sister! Not only are these cute little slippers great for dancing the night away at weddings but when the dogs are barkin', these will be the thing you need!
You can find flats of all different shapes, sizes, colors, textures, embellishes, etc, but I find the simple, stretchy, stow and go ones are the very best for all occasions!

Here I have two examples, the higher priced ones and of course the penny-pincher!

1.) Tory Burch Eddie Patent Ballet Flat in Black.  $178. So adorably chic and who doesn't love Tory!!

Tory Burch "Eddie" Ballet Flat

2.) Gap - The City Flat in Black. $39.95 STEAL of a deal! I actually own these ones and love them. They come with a convenient little draw sting bag for you to fold up the flats, stick them in the bag, and GO! How easy is that!

Gap The City Flat

Seriously you will love the convenience of these flats. They are great after wearing heels all day, slipping them on in the car to drive home, wear around the house, the list goes on! So, flatten out those feet!! :-)

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Its October so lets paint the town pink and help aid in those who have suffered breast cancer and the research and development to continue to save the lives of those diagnosed and to provide early detection.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, it is estimated that 200,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year. The evaluation of men with breast masses is nearly close to that number as well. Breast cancer can affect, me, you, your/our: Grandma, Sister, Dad, Mother, Aunt, Brother, Best Friend, Neighbor. The list goes on of who could potentially be affect by this terrible disease.
Knowing these facts, there are many things big and small that you can do to help those affected and the future development for more cures.
I wanted to make a special post and dedicate it to the many survivors I know, you know who you are, are were so brave to battle this disease and I will do all I can to try to help with this foundation and its study.

Many companies such as NFL, Columbia, Philosophy, to name a few,  have teamed up with the Susan Koman foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation to give opportunity to help make a difference. Here are 5 easy ways you can help too!

1.) Dannon Yogurt. On specially marked Dannon yogurts, under the peel away top is a site (click here) with directions and a code provided by NBCF. Go to the site, enter your code and wa-la you have just donated 10 cents!! You have helped!! Just by buying yogurt you have provided a donation to helping others. This is completely priceless!
From official Dannon site.

2.) Athletic Wear. Dick Sporting Goods has teamed up with NBCF to provide awesome pink athletic wear to help raise awareness with them and support them for the large donation they make yearly to the foundation! A bonus, order something pink and you get FREE shipping! Wahoo!

Dicksportinggoods.com

3.) Sephora. One of my other favorite go to sites for all things beauty related has teamed up to provide several pink options to you! I've chosen my favorite that is a Perfect Pink Brush Set complete with a travel size bag. It's value is $150.00 but now sold at $60.00. BARGIN! Not to mention super cute! For each one sold, $1 is donated to the NBCF!
Sephora.com

4.) Vino anyone? That's right! J. Lohr Vineyards has teamed up as well and donates $2 for every bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon sold to NBCF. Throw a wine and cheese party! Cheers!

From official J.Lohr Vineyards Site.

5.) National Breast Cancer Foundation. Last but for sure not the least is the foundation it self. There are multiple ways to help there. Donations, Volunteering, Fundraising, Partnering, etc. Go directly to their site, explore and learn. At the very least educate yourself on Breast Cancer. Help save a life, or your own. :)

I love making my home smell good and when I'm not cooking up a storm, I love to burn candles from Bath and Body Works. Their scented candles capture the exact fragrance of all the yummy simple pleasures in the world. Some of my recent buys are: Hot Chocolate, Fireside, Apple Crumble, and Autumn. I hoping to get two more of my favorites; Pumpkin Patch and Cinnamon Stick.

Another wonderful thing about these yummy candles is you can burn more than one scent at a time and it just creates this world full of happiness!!! Bath and Body Works keeps you on your toes by always updating and changing the scents often!

Oops, I almost forgot! You can also get these cute little metal tins that have different patterns to them to place your candles in. See the first photo for how they glow!

Sunday Sweets

Tonight we are going to have dinner with the family so I decided to whip up a fall inspired special treat to take over! Today I made White Chocolate Bark. I took the idea from food networks 5 Ingredient Fix show and of course made it my own!

Amy's White Chocolate Bark

1- 12oz bag of white chocolate chips
1/3 cup of Cranberries
1/3 Chopped Walnuts
3 drops of Lemon Extract, just enough to get a little extra flavor (any flavor will work, whatever flavors you like! Orange, Vanilla, Etc.)
1-2 drop of Orange Food Coloring

-Melt White Chocolate in a double boiler on stove OR follow microwave directions on package but don't over heat.
-When Chocolate is melted, reserve about 2 Tablespoons aside in a separate dish.
-Mix Cranberries and Chopped Walnuts in with big bowl of melted chocolate.
-Immediately pour chocolate mixture on to a wax paper lined cookie sheet.
-Next quickly mix Extract and Food Coloring into the 2 Tablespoons of reserved chocolate.
-Once mixed, take a fork and drizzle colored chocolate on top of mixture on cookie sheet and spread out as even as possible. *Note, this will not cover the entire cookie sheet.
-Place in refrigerator for at least 1 hour for chocolate to harden and set up.
-Take out of refrigerator and break apart bark with finger into pieces.

-Wrap as you like and enjoy the special treat!

Have a super sweet Sunday y'all! :)

Something old, something new!

As you will notice from some of my other posts, I love to combine styles (ie. Leather and Lace, Army and Sequin, Rocker and Princess). I also love to make something old, new again!
I cannot take all the credit for this idea as I picked it up from a Benefit Chicago Pearl Company party I attended but I took the idea into my own jewelry box and here is what I made.

I took my favorite Marc Jacobs safety pin necklace and my pearl bracelet from the Chicago Pearl Company and hooked them together.

Thus creating a new look to a necklace and combining two styles together!! Fun, Fast, and cost zero to do! You can do this with any necklace and bracelet that have clasps to them. The options are endless with this one! Try it out and post your pictures on facebook!!

Do a body good!

I'm sure most of us have heard the daunting statistic that 90% of the dust in our homes is dead skin cells right? Ew!!
Well, the best way to combat that statistic and have smooth glowy skin is to exfoliate and moisturize. Since the summer is over and now the cool crisp air has flown in, its time to treat our bodies and skin to prolong that bronzed summer glow and stay smooth.

A few tips I recommend:

1.) I always try to make an appointment with my local spa for a body glow treatment. This is a special once in awhile treatment that not only feels and smells great but my whole body feels like all the skin cells have been rejuvenated. In addition, a scrub stimulates the skin and muscles optimizing healing and detoxifying. Lots of benefits!!! So get in a make that appointment! Trust me, you are worth it ;-)

2.) One of my favorite penny-pincher moisturizers is Johnson and Johnson's 24 Hour Body lotion. Now a days they have changed the scent slightly so don't worry, you won't smell like a freshly powered baby's butt! lol It isn't greasy, absorbs well, and leaves your skin ohhhh so smooth!

3.) Lastly, moisturize from the inside out. I promise, the more water you drink in a day, the better you will feel. Your skin will be glowy and clear. Don't go guzzling down your entire Sigg at once, just make sure you are sipping all day. You should be drinking, half your body's weight in ounces. Example: 150lbs = 75onces of water PER day! Check out my past article about the Bobble!

Now go do your body some good!

Buy a hat. Change a life.

Krochet Kids Internation official logo direct from site.

Feeling inspired today by people doing good things in the world...

I recently saw a commercial for Bing presenting a company called Krochet Kids International. It immediately struck my attention and I went to their site and quickly became a supporter and a facebook fan.
This incredible company was created by three young brave men hoping to not only make a difference in the world but induce change. After spending much time in Uganda, these young men began the Krochet Kids International company providing work for the people of Uganda, equal opportunity, and fair wage to name a few things by knitting items. Items such as hats and scarves are hand crafted and signed by each individual that makes them, making them one of a kind. Please visit the site and enjoy their story along with me and help support a country and company that deserves not just opportunity but someone who believes in them.

The Waldo
Purchases can be made on their site directly and today, September 14, 2011 marks a special day as they have released the new fall line! I made my first purchase today and bought the The Helm and The Waldo.

The Helm

Thank you for helping change lives with me, every little bit helps! :)
